SUMMARY:Panel: Reporting on Oceans Through an Equity Lens
DESCRIPTION:Oceans are often framed narrowly as “nature” to be conserved. While protection matters\, journalists can deepen their reporting by examining how oceans\, lakes and rivers shape the livelihoods\, cultures and sense of place of the communities who depend on them. \nIn 2025\, the Metcalf Institute and Ocean Nexus Institutes at the University of Rhode Island partnered with The Uproot Project to support three journalists exploring how our relationships with the oceans are intertwined with systemic inequities\, marginalization and exploitation. Working closely with Ocean Nexus scientists whose research is grounded in intersectionality and critical practice\, fellows produced science-informed reporting on the cruise industry’s impacts on Caribbean communities\, deep-sea mining controversies affecting communities across the Southern Pacific\, and the global seafood trade’s effects on fishing communities in Louisiana and Mexico. \nAttendees will hear from the 2025 fellows and receive resource guides to cover oceans and water systems through an equity lens in their own regions. \nModerator: \n\nLucia Priselac\, Grist\, Director\, The Uproot Project\n\n\n\nSpeakers \n\nLuis Joel Méndez González\, Centro de Periodismo Investigativo\, Periodista Investigativo | Investigative Reporter\nRachel Ramirez\, The Confluence/Freelance\, Writer and Reporter\nEva Tesfaye\, Wwno\, Coastal reporter

SUMMARY:My Home\, My Story
DESCRIPTION:What happens when the disaster you’re covering is also happening to you? Environmental journalists can find themselves reporting on a crisis while navigating its impact on their own homes\, families\, and communities. This conversation will explore the emotional perseverance and practical challenges of continuing to work in the aftermath of a natural disaster\, from balancing personal needs with professional responsibilities to navigating disrupted housing\, communication\, transportation\, and other logistics. We’ll also consider how these experiences can be shaped by inequities that leave communities of color disproportionately vulnerable to disaster and its aftermath.

SUMMARY:Journey of a Story
DESCRIPTION:Join The Uproot Project for an exhibition of journalism\, taking you behind the scenes of a story to understand the experiences of environmental journalists of color. This event will feature stories that examine the role of persistence in the face of environmental challenges. You’ll be invited to read reflections from the journalists who wrote these stories\, and listen to a short talk between a few local journalists. In the wake of frequent climate disasters\, frontline communities endure\, working towards a better climate future. Likewise\, environmental journalists strive to shed light on stories that remain important long after the twenty-four-hour news cycle moves on. Despite ever-increasing challenges\, the communities and movements on the frontlines of the climate crisis—and the journalists who tell their stories—remain. Light bites and drinks will be served.
